The sleepy area of Ladywell - more of a stopover between the hubs of Lewisham and Catford Bridge - has been abuzz with the opening of a fab new cafe. Situated close to the rail sation, Oscars is already doing a good trade in its well-made coffees and freshly baked pastries delivered from Blackheath's Boulangerie Jade; the golden croissants, pain au chocolate and pain au raisin are piled invitingly on the wooden countertop to greet visitors, while baguettes and sourdough loafs peek out from wicker baskets. Also available, in time for an Indian summer, are ice creams from Manor Farm Creamery in Suffolk. More substantial items include moreish quicjhes - leek and bacon or the swankier spinach with smoked salmon and parmesan are among the choices - while the cafe doubles as a shop for fine artisanal foods (manzanilla olives, handmade bonbons in conical bags, dried pastas and preserves). The interiors have a certain European eclecticism - a grand chandelier hands in the main room while a floor to ceiling Klimt print adorns the wall behind the counter. A whimsical back garden is almost childlike in the details - a small clay bird peeks out from between the plants, sparkly plastic geckos climb on the walls and fresh flowers grow out of giant teacups. With a rare place like this, passers-by can't help but give it a second glance. August 21-27 2008
